  2. Marangu Route: Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only path with hut accommodations, providing a more comfortable experience. It is considered one of the easier routes, although its rapid ascent can pose acclimatization challenges. The journey usually spans five to six days.
  3. Lemosho Route: Renowned for its stunning vistas and lower traffic, the Lemosho Route is ideal for those seeking a more tranquil climb. It offers excellent acclimatization opportunities over its seven to eight-day itinerary, enhancing summit success rates.
  4. Rongai Route: Approaching from the north, the Rongai Route is less crowded and offers a unique perspective of the mountain. It is generally drier than other routes, making it a good option during the rainy season. The climb typically takes six to seven days.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to climb it?

The optimal periods for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro are from June to late October and from early December to early March. During these months, the weather conditions on the mountain are generally favorable for trekking. While the remaining months may experience rainfall, it is important to note that this does not equate to continuous heavy downpours. Typically, rain tends to occur in the latter half of the day, providing trekkers with a substantial window of clear weather each day, even during the rainy season. Additionally, there are often days when no rain falls at all.

The most convenient way to access Mount Kilimanjaro is by flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Tanzania. From the airport, it is a brief 45-minute drive to Moshi, the primary starting point for most climbing expeditions. Major airlines, including Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, KLM, Ethiopian Airlines, and Air France, provide regular flights to JRO.
Alternatively, travelers may choose to fly into Dar es Salaam and then take a domestic flight to Kilimanjaro. However, this option may incur additional costs for domestic flights and baggage fees. For those seeking a more budget-friendly route, flying into Nairobi, Kenya, is another possibility. From Nairobi, you can take a bus to Moshi; however, please be aware of the extra expenses associated with obtaining a Kenyan transit visa ($21) and the bus fare ($45). This journey typically takes around seven hours in total.
When planning your trip, consider these options carefully to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey to one of the world’s most iconic peaks.

At Beyond Average, we understand the importance of proper preparation and recovery when embarking on the challenging ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. Therefore, our expeditions typically include accommodations both before and after the climb. We provide one night of lodging in either Moshi or Arusha prior to your trek, as well as an additional night following your adventure. This arrangement not only facilitates acclimatization but also offers a well-deserved opportunity to relax and reflect on your remarkable journey.

Our team is expertly trained to assist individuals at all fitness levels. Mount Kilimanjaro is accessible to beginners, even those without prior trekking experience. The most critical factor for a successful ascent is not merely hiking skills, but rather proper acclimatization, which is best achieved through a 7 to 8-day trekking route.
To enhance your chances of reaching the summit, it is essential to select a good Kilimanjaro team and adhere closely to your guides’ safety instructions. For valuable insights into what to expect during your Kilimanjaro climb, we invite you to read this article authored by one of our past climbers.
If you are seeking guidance on how to physically prepare for the trek, please refer to our comprehensive Kilimanjaro training guide. Alternatively, feel free to email us, and our dedicated team will be more than happy to assist you throughout the training process.

The most significant risk associated with climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is acute mountain sickness (AMS), which can arise from inadequate acclimatization. In severe instances, AMS may progress to cerebral or pulmonary edema—both of which are life-threatening conditions that contribute to approximately ten fatalities each year on the mountain.
For a comprehensive overview of mortality statistics related to Kilimanjaro, we invite you to explore our dedicated article on the subject. Fortunately, AMS is largely preventable. To mitigate the risk, we recommend selecting an itinerary of seven days or longer, maintaining proper hydration, and ascending at a gradual pace to facilitate effective altitude adaptation.
The expertise of your guide is paramount in ensuring a safe climbing experience. We advise choosing an operator whose Kilimanjaro guides are certified Wilderness First Responders, equipped to manage emergencies and conduct evacuations if necessary. For further insights on acclimatization strategies specific to Kilimanjaro, please refer to our detailed article on the topic.
